LABRYS is the songwriting identity of Penny Pitchlynn, an alternative singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, born, raised and rooted in Norman, OK. Named in 2017 with the release of a seven song, self-titled EP written and recorded at Blackwatch Studios in Norman, LABRYS became a live project first as a solo looping performance, but quickly evolved into a full on garage rock band in 2021. Since then LABRYS has played both coasts of the U.S. sharing stages with acts like BRONCHO, Caroline Rose, Black Belt Eagle Scout, Bambino, DEHD and more, while being heard on a variety of network television hits like Netflix's Nobody Wants This or FX's Reservation Dogs, Better Things, The Low Down, among many others. Penny is also a subject in Sterlin Harjo's Documentary Love and Fury, depicting the experiences of a variety of working Native artists in the modern world. Combining a graveled low end, ruminative vocals and vulnerable lyrics, LABRYS wields a heavy yet agile sound. Pushing forward across an unpredictable landscape, LABRYS is an emotional nomad, a perpetually evolving ecosystem of expression, drawing language from meditative listening and birthing sound from silence.
